A European league match being played in the United States looks closer than ever.

On Sunday, The Athletic reported that La Liga held preliminary discussions to relocate December’s La Liga fixture between Villarreal and Barcelona to Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium. A day later, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) approved the move and said it would submit a request to Europe’s governing body UEFA to initiate the procedures for FIFA to grant authorisation.

The main representative of Spanish football supporters’ groups soon responded, describing the plan as “shameful” and calling on Spain’s High Sports Council, a governmental body, to intervene.

“Moving a Spanish league match abroad undermines the integrity of the competition and violates the rights of local season ticket holders who have paid to watch all the matches at their stadium,” read a statement from FASFE, the Federation of Shareholders and Members of Spanish Football.
