Good News: SWO Tribal Transit to Expand Operations with Federal Funding | Local News

{KXLG – Watertown, SD} Community Transit of Watertown/Sisseton announced the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate of the Lake Traverse Reservation will receive $690,327 in funding to expand its transit operations, including the addition of vehicles for new routes and weekend hours to ensure continued transit services for tribal members in northeastern South Dakota.

This expansion project will help maintain access to healthcare and education opportunities in and around the reservation.

The Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate Tribal Transit was among 26 organizations across 14 states to receive a portion of the $9.6 million awarded by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA).

In fiscal year 2023, the program received applications for 41 eligible projects, totaling $19 million in requests. A total of 22 projects were funded across 22 tribes, amounting to $9.9 million. The funding awarded varied between $25,000 and over $1 million.
