CATL (SHE: 300750) and BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) maintained their positions as the world’s two largest electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturers in January-May, according to the latest data.
Global EV battery usage totaled 401.3 GWh in January-May, up 38.5 percent from 289.8 GWh in the same period last year, according to data released today by South Korean market research firm SNE Research.
CATL’s EV battery installations totaled 152.7 GWh in January-May, up 40.6 percent from 108.6 GWh in the same period last year.
The Chinese battery giant maintained its position as the world’s top supplier with a 38.1 percent market share in January-May, remaining the only battery supplier with a market share exceeding 30 percent.
This is higher than its 37.5 percent share in January-May 2024 and flat from its share in January-April 2025.
BYD’s EV battery installations came in at 70.0 GWh in January-May, up 57.1 percent from 44.5 GWh in the same period last year.
The company ranked second with a 17.4 percent market share in January-May, up from 15.4 percent in January-May 2024 and 17.3 percent in January-April 2025.
LG Energy Solution’s battery installations for January-May totaled 39.9 GWh, up 14.3 percent year-on-year.
The South Korean company maintained its third-place position with a 10.0 percent market share in January-May, down from 12.1 percent in the same period last year and also below the 10.2 percent recorded in January-April 2025.
China’s CALB ranked fourth with a 4.2 percent market share, up one position compared with January-April. In the January-April period, CALB ranked fifth with a 3.9 percent market share.
South Korea’s SK On ranked fifth with a 4.2 percent market share, down one position from January-April. In January-April, SK On ranked fourth with a 4.3 percent market share.
Gotion High-tech ranked sixth with a 3.4 percent share in January-May, with both its share and ranking unchanged from January-April.
South Korea’s Samsung SDI, Japan’s Panasonic, China’s Eve Energy, and Svolt Energy ranked seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth, respectively, with shares of 3.3 percent, 2.9 percent, 2.7 percent, and 2.6 percent in January-May.
CATL’s market share in May increased by 3.44 percentage points compared to April, while BYD’s share decreased by 3.86 percentage points.
