From Queen Vic to the Recent Past, Exploring Wedding Fashion at the Museum

Queen Victoria’s long reign coincided with the dramatic increase in literacy, mass-market books and print periodicals, as well as the birth of photography. These developments helped ensure that the monarch of the vast British Empire was also something of a style-setter. And in some ways, she was ahead of her time: She proposed to Prince Albert!

She later wrote that her wedding was the happiest event in her life.

According to Wikipedia, her cream-colored satin wedding dress was made from fabric woven in London, and trimmed with a deep flounce and trimmings of lace hand-made in Devon. The veil, which matched the flounce of the dress, was four yards in length and 0.75 yards wide. Her jewelry consisted of diamond earrings and necklace, and a sapphire brooch given to her by Albert. The slippers she wore matched the white color of the dress. The train of the dress, carried by her bridesmaids, measured 18 feet long.

These and many other details of some of the most influential and iconic weddings from Victoria to the recent past will be brought to life by Lisa Micheels who holds an MFA from University of Miami. She has taught fashion and theatre based classes in the Boston area since 1989 and
is currently a member of the faculty of the School of Fashion Design in Boston. In 1992 she launched her Very Eclectic Clothing line of hand-painted clothing and accessories. The program starts at 1:15. The museum, at 80 West Central Street,  is open from 1-4 and admission is free.
