Forgetting this 1 task could cost drivers £400 this winter

This small lapse in judgment could lead to scratches and cracks, something that could have a massive impact on your wallet.

If you’re looking to protect your vehicles this season, here is what you need to know.

Forgetting to do this one task could cost motorists over £400 this winter

Warning against the car washing mistake made by many drivers, expert Ian Hajyzamanali at the used car dealership Big Motoring World said it is important to rinse your car before fully washing it.

He said: “Before you reach for the sponge or soap, give your car a rinse with warm water.

“In winter, road salt and dirt can cling to the surface of the car, especially around wheel arches.

“A warm pre-rinse can help to soften this buildup, making the actual wash easier, and reducing the risk of scratching your paint.”

However, he added that motorists should make sure this water isn’t too hot, as the sudden temperature change could lead to cracks in the paint and glass.

This comes as the experts over at Show Plates World warn drivers against parking their car underneath trees.

When wet falling leaves land on your car and are left there for days, the natural acids they release can erode its protective coating and paint.

This can cost a hefty sum, with the price to repair damage typically starting at around £150 for a single panel, rising to £400 or more for deeper work, and can exceed £1,000 if a full respray is required.

Highlighting the danger of falling leaves further, the expert added that leaves can also gather in tricky spots such as around windscreen wipers, under the bonnet, and inside drainage channels.

When the latter becomes blocked, water can collect in places it shouldn’t, eventually leading to rust, leaks inside the cabin, or even electrical issues.
