Sir, Edward Lucas describes well the realities when making the case for flattering President Trump (“Flatter Trump — our security depends on it”, Apr 24), but it will stick in the craw of many after only a moment’s reflection on Trump’s behaviour during his first term in office, and now the ambitions and antics of his present administration. Flatter Trump if we must, but any gains may be transitory when dealing with so mercurial a character. Lucas suggests that Trump’s “gnat-like attention span” will be of benefit because no follow-up to our sycophancy may be necessary, but is it not just as likely to mean that any future perceived slight or “falling out of line” on our part will provoke
