Europe’s plastic consumption rises, generating 13.4 million tonnes of CO2 annually
Amid ongoing global negotiations for a treaty to combat plastic pollution, plastic consumption in Europe continues to increase, according to a report in Euronews. The production, use, and disposal of plastics in the European Union now generate approximately 13.4 million tonnes of CO2 emissions each year. This occurs as member states and EU institutions work to implement internal policies like the Green Deal while also participating in UN-led efforts to create a legally binding international agreement to end plastic pollution. Packaging remains the primary use for plastics across the continent, representing a key challenge for waste reduction and circular economy goals.
