Elon, N.C. – On Saturday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center, the Elon University women’s tennis team had an impressive sweep against CAA opponent, College of Charleston. The Phoenix claimed the 7-0 victory over Charleston, raising their record to 13-6 while dropping Charleston to 12-8. Elon won all three doubles matches and all six singles matches, dropping just one set along the way.

Elon was electric right out of the gate, as doubles team Helen Sarikulaya and Lisa Kranec got a quick 6-1 win. To secure the doubles point, Simone Bergeron and Mariana Reding posted a 6-3 win. However, two doubles wins were not enough for the Phoenix, as they continued to win the third doubles contest as well.

The Phoenix went into singles with energy, which they kept throughout the match. Freshman Lisa Kranec defeated Charleston’s Isabella De Luise in a quick 6-0, 6-0 match. At 14-2, Kranec has the best singles record on the team and has now won 11 of her last 12 decisions. Finishing second, with an easy win, was Simone Bergeron, who won 6-3, 6-0 over Maja Jekauc at No. 1 singles. To clinch the match, freshman Heidi Bulger had a 6-2, 6-1 win over Sia Cariov.

But the Phoenix wasn’t satisfied with just four points on the board. Madison Cordisco and Mariana Reding were hungry for wins as they defeated their opponents. Reding won 6-2, 7-5, and Cordisco won 6-4, 6-4.

Despite Elon being up by six points, the Cougars did not give up. Helen Sarikulaya and Oziera Ahmad did not let up as they went into a ten-point tie break third set. After much anticipation, Sarikulaya won the seventh point for Elon, defeating Ahmad 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8).

Up next: The Phoenix will face UNC Greensboro at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. This match will be one of only three remaining matches in the season. UNC Greensboro currently holds a record of 3-15.
