It is hard to overstate the panic that has gripped American science in the last few weeks. Federal funding is being slashed, partly as a weapon Trump can use to bully America’s elite universities. Critics say it also reflects a prejudice within the Trump camp against publicly-funded science and, some suggest, science itself.
