Lucknow: In a first-of-its-kind case of cybercrime, a family in Hussainganj area found themselves cut off from communication for hours after cyber fraudsters allegedly hacked all their mobile phones.
The accused, who claimed to have infiltrated their home’s electronic devices, sent chilling messages stating, “I can see you all.” The incident left the family in distress, prompting an investigation by police.
Vikram Chopra, a resident of Purana Qila, said the alleged cyber fraudsters not only hacked his and his family members’ phones, but also gained access to their home’s electronic gadgets. “The fraudsters seem to have complete knowledge of our household activities. They have taken control of our electronic devices and know every movement inside the house,” he said.
Vikram claimed that the fraudsters possibly planted a surveillance device (bug) in their home. “They are monitoring our conversations even when we write things down in a diary. Whatever we note down, they somehow access it, write it in our phone gallery and send it back to us. They repeatedly say, ‘We can see you. Your location is under our control,'” he added.
Assistant Commissioner of Police, Hazratganj, Vikas Jaiswal said investigations are underway.
Meanwhile, Vikram, who faced this ordeal for over a month, lodged complaints with the cyber cell and on the chief minister’s portal.
Former IPS and cyber expert, Triveni Singh told TOI that a detailed forensic analysis will have to be conducted on all the phones that were hacked and a detailed reverse engineering ought to be conducted to know the bug. Usually, in such cases, cyber criminals use APK (Android Package Kit) files for Android phones, he said.
“They can be dangerous because they can gain control over your device and conduct unauthorised transactions,” said Singh.
