Crash on southbound US-131 leaves man dead

Troopers said it appeared the man wasn’t wearing a seatbelt when the crash happened.

KENT COUNTY, Mich. — A person is dead after an early morning crash on southbound US-131, according to the Michigan State Police (MSP).

Troopers said the single-vehicle crash happened around 4:30 a.m. on southbound US-131 south of Post Drive.

A 35-year-old man from Howard City drove off the roadway and struck a tree in the median, MSP said.

Troopers said it appeared the man wasn’t wearing a seatbelt and was declared dead at the scene.

“Please keep this family in your thoughts during this tragic time,” MSP said in a post on X.

The crash is under investigation by Grand Rapids Post troopers.

A portion of southbound US-131 was closed for several hours. It has since reopened.
