Cop asks for bribe from NRI staying in UK, booked

New Delhi: The vigilance unit of Delhi Police booked an inspector for demanding bribe from an NRI for registering a case based on his complaint. The cop has been sent to the District Lines.
The complainant, a woman residing in England, holds special legal power of attorney on behalf of an NRI, who is from Jalandhar and a resident of West Midlands, England. The woman has been authorised to handle his legal affairs in India. She filed a complaint on behalf of the NRI, alleging that he was cheated by a woman and her three brothers on the pretext of marriage. The complaint was filed in Oct 2024 at KN Katju police station.
“I visited the police station multiple times to inquire about the progress of my complaint, but nobody apprised me of the outcome. After three or four visits, I received a phone call from a person who introduced himself as inspector Pramod Kumar. He informed me that he was assigned to handle my complaint and directed me to meet him personally,” the complainant said.
She met the inspector at the police station, where he demanded Rs 5 lakh to expedite the registration of the case. “He wrote the amount, Rs 5 lakh, on a piece of paper and told me that if I didn’t pay, things wouldn’t move forward properly,” the woman said. She claimed to have strong evidence against the accused. Later, the inspector reduced his demand to Rs 2 lakh. She recorded their entire conversation using a hidden camera.
On Dec 3, the complainant filed a complaint against the inspector at the vigilance unit office. A trap was set to catch Kumar near a hospital, where he was to receive part of the bribe amount, Rs 40,000. However, he sensed the presence of vigilance unit officers and fled. The team followed him in a car and intercepted him. The complainant provided a pen drive attached containing an audio-video recording of the alleged demand for money. A case was subsequently registered.
