The City of Cambridge has launched a Tariff Impact Survey to better understand the concerns of local businesses amidst the threat of U.S. tariffs and help advocate for necessary support measures.
“As we as a country enter these uncharted waters of an unpredictable U.S. administration, we do so alongside our businesses,” said Mayor Jan Liggett. “The strength of our economy combines both local and international business and I want to make sure that as we make decisions, we do so in the best way possible to assist those businesses and keep them on a stable track. Diversity is our strength and no matter how large or small a company is, they add to that diversity of our economy. This has always kept us safe in times of downturns. We want to know your concerns and what you think we may do to assist. I ask that you please take a few minutes to fill out the questionnaire so that you might help us, help you.”
The survey, being conducted by the City’s Economic Development team, aims to gather information on the challenges businesses face including data on the sectors affected, size of business, and percentage of exports. Information gathered will be used to implement appropriate programing and resources, advocated for necessary response programs from other levels of government, and make connections with industry partners to assist the local business community.
“We recognize that local businesses are facing new and often evolving challenges,” said Michael Launslager, Director of Economic Development. “This survey will help us get a clearer understanding of those challenges so we can best advocate and pursue meaningful support resources.”
Economic Development staff are also working with partners at the Chamber of Commerce, Waterloo Region Economic Development Corporation, municipal partners, and other levels of government to mitigate the effect of tariffs on the community.
