China has accused British MPs of “arrogance” and of having a “twisted mindset” in a growing diplomatic row over British Steel.

The government was forced to take direct control of the company over the weekend in response to concern that its Beijing-based owners would not keep its Scunthorpe plant running.

Ministers feared that Jingye planned to sabotage the site to increase the UK’s reliance on cheap Chinese imports and MPs accused Beijing of deliberately undermining Britain’s industrial base.
