ByteDance’s popular video editing app, CapCut, has suspended its services in the United States following the enforcement of a federal ban on TikTok. The Supreme Court upheld the law, which mandates ByteDance to either sell TikTok or face a nationwide ban due to national security concerns.
CapCut, which allows users to create and edit videos for platforms like TikTok and Instagram, displayed a notification on its landing page stating, “Sorry, CapCut isn’t available right now. A new law banning CapCut has been enacted in the US. Unfortunately, that means you can’t use CapCut for now. Rest assured, we’re working to restore our service in the US. Please stay tuned!”
The suspension of CapCut, alongside TikTok, has impacted millions of users who relied on the app for video editing and content creation. The law, passed with bipartisan support, addresses concerns over data privacy and national security, particularly TikTok’s ties to China.
TikTok banned in the US
TikTok has stopped working in the US, reports Reuters. This means people in the US can no longer use the popular short-video platform. After months of legal battles, the US Supreme Court on Friday, January 17 approved a law to ban TikTok, citing national security concerns. TikTok users in the US now see this message when they open the app:
“A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the U.S. Unfortunately, that means you can’t use TikTok for now. We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to reinstate TikTok once he takes office. Please stay tuned”.
