The policies are in reference to a new state law banning the use of personal communication devices in schools.
LAMPASAS, Texas — Two Central Texas school districts have announced new cell phone policies in response to a new state law taking effect this year.
Bryan ISD and Lampasas ISD have both announced new policies in accordance with House Bill 1481, which requires school districts to enforce policies preventing students from using personal electronic devices during the school day.
Lampasas ISD stated it will use a “commonsense” approach in implementing the law. If a personal communication device is seen on campus, it will be confiscated, and the “appropriate consequence” will be applied, the district said.
Each campus will communicate the consequence they have developed “very soon,” according to LISD.
The district stated the new law does allow exceptions for students with “documented medical or safety needs,” as well as students with Individualized Education Programs or Section 504 plans requiring device access. School issued devices are not subject to the law, according to the district.
Bryan ISD stated its Board of Trustees adopted a new policy at a board meeting on July 21 in accordance with the law, which they say prohibits the use of cell phones, smartwatches, earbuds, tablets, laptops and “similar communication tools.”
The district said the devices are prohibited during the school day, which is defined as the time between the first bell and last bell. Students are allowed to use personal devices before and after school, according to BISD.
Bryan ISD said the Board of Trustees is preparing to adopt an updated Student Code of Conduct to comply with the state mandate. The new code of conduct will reportedly include “clearly defined consequences” for violating the new policy.
The district said the updated Code of Conduct will be published and available to all families before the start of the upcoming school year.
