Britain’s carmakers reel after market fallout

Matt Harwood was braced for bad news. As he tuned in to watch President Trump’s “liberation day” announcement on Wednesday night, his eyes were fixed on the board the president held up displaying his charges on importers.

The news was as bad as he feared. While Britain was subject only to the 10 per cent blanket tariff, the car industry was slapped with 25 per cent levy. Harwood, who runs Barkley Plastics, a supplier of mouldings to the car industry, is watching closely.

Located in the heart of Birmingham, Harwood’s business employs 55 staff and is one of the 2,500 suppliers to Britain’s carmakers. These are concentrated in the West Midlands — the region that economists at professional services firm PwC expect to be hardest
