Best films released in the UK this month: August 2025

There’s also a couple of hotly-anticipated horror flicks in the shape of Weapons and Together, plus a new adaptation of Stephen King’s novella The Life of Chuck – one of the relatively rare examples of a work by the prolific writer that doesn’t fall into the horror genre.

Two of the film world’s more divisive big-name directors – Ari Aster and Darren Aronofsky – also both have new films out in the shape of Eddington and Caught Stealing respectively, while first-time feature filmmaker Eva Victor has wowed many critics with their debut Sorry, Baby.

Meanwhile, fans eagerly awaiting the adaptation of Richard Osman’s best-selling Thursday Murder Club are also in luck – with the film getting a limited theatrical release six days ahead of its Netflix debut at the end of the month.

The Naked Gun

Release date: Friday 1st August in cinemas

Liam Neeson takes over from the late Leslie Nielsen in this reboot of the beloved spoof franchise – which comes more than 30 years after the previous entry and sees him play Frank Lt Frank Drebin Jr, the son of Nielsen’s character from the original movies.

Directed and co-written by The Lonely Island’s Akiva Schaffer, it contains all the slapstick, silliness and wordplay that fans of the original run would hope for, with memorable supporting performances from the likes of Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, Kevin Durand and Danny Huston.

Weapons

Release date: Friday 8th August in cinemas

This hotly-anticipated horror from Barbarian writer/director Zach Cregger explores events after a classroom of children goes mysteriously missing – with the events unfolding from the perspective of various characters including school-teacher Justine Gandy (Julia Garner) and concerned parent Archie Graff (Josh Brolin).

With each new perspective, the audience gleans more information about the mysterious force behind the disappearance – with the secrets best left completely unspoiled for maximum impact. But rest assured there are plenty of scares – and a couple of laughs – packed into the engrossing run-time.

Freakier Friday

Release date: Friday 8th August in cinemas

Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis reprise their roles as mother and daughter Tess and Anna Coleman from the 2003 original in this sequel – which sees them experience an unexpected body swap on an even more chaotic scale than before.

This time around, it’s not each other they swap bodies with, but Anna’s teenage daughter Harper (Julia Butters) and her nemesis and soon-to-be step-sister Lily (Sophia Hammons), which causes some pretty major problems for Anna’s imminent marriage to Lily’s father Eric (Manny Jacinto).

Materialists

Release date: Wednesday 13th August in cinemas

Celine Song’s Oscar-nominated drama Past Lives is one of the most critically adored films of recent years, and she follows it up with this modern day rom-com starring Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans.

Johnson plays failed actress-turned-professional matchmaker Lucy, who finds herself in a love triangle involving a charming millionaire (Pascal) and her struggling actor ex-boyfriend (Evans) while living a glamorous life in New York.

Release date: Friday 15th August in cinemas

Bob Odenkirk returns to action star mode in this sequel to the 2021 hit, which sees his character – assassin Hutch Mansell – caught up in even more carnage after taking his family on a much needed holiday.

Connie Nielsen, RZA, Michael Ironside, Colin Salmon, Billy MacLellan and Christopher Lloyd are among the stars reprising their roles from the original, with Colin Hanks, John Ortiz and Sharon Stone joining the cast as three shady figures involved in corrupt practises at a theme park.

Together

Release date: Friday 15th August in cinemas

Real-life couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie star in this body horror flick from debut director Michael Shanks, playing a married pair who move to the countryside and soon encounter a mysterious, nightmarish force that makes horrifying changes to their bodies.

This presence adds further tension to their already deteriorating relationship, testing their love for each other to the very limit.

The Life of Chuck

Release date: Wednesday 20th August in cinemas

This Stephen King adaptation from the prolific Mike Flanagan won the prestigious People’s Choice Award at last year’s Toronto Film Festival and stars Tom Hiddleston, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan and Mark Hamill, among others.

As its title suggests, the film tells the life story of a man named Chuck (or Charles Krantz, to use his full name) but the tale unfolds in three acts told in reverse order, beginning with his death – which coincides with the end of the universe – and ending with his childhood.

The Thursday Murder Club

Release date: Friday 22nd August in cinemas

This adaptation of Richard Osman’s best-selling crime novel of the same name boasts a starry cast including Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley, Celia Imrie and Helen Mirren, and is getting a limited theatrical run before coming to Netflix on Thursday 28th.

The film tells the story of four retirees whose penchant for solving cold cases takes a thrilling turn when they find themselves with a real whodunit on their hands. All going well, this is expected to be the first in a series – with four books already published and a fifth on the way.

Eddington

Release date: Friday 22nd August in cinemas

Hereditary and Midsommar director Ari Aster returns with his divisive fourth feature, which stars Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal as rival mayoral candidates in a New Mexico town – set during the height of the COVID pandemic in 2020.

Billed as a neo-Western black comedy, the film opened to mixed reviews at the Cannes Film Festival – with viewers divided about its handling of hot button issues around the lockdowns and the culture wars. The starry cast also includes roles for Austin Butler and Emma Stone.

Sorry, Baby

Release date: Friday 22nd August in cinemas

This A24 comedy-drama from debut filmmaker Eva Victor – who also stars in the lead role – boasts Moonlight’s Barry Jenkins as a producer and received rave reviews when it premiered at Sundance Film Festival.

It follows literature professor Agnes as she deals with a traumatic sexual assault while watching the world go on as normal for those around her. The synopsis teases: “When a beloved friend on the brink of a major milestone visits, Agnes starts to realise just how stuck she’s been, and begins to work through how to move forward.”

Caught Stealing

Release date: Friday 29th August in cinemas

Darren Aronofsky’s latest new film is a crime thriller written by novelist Charlie Huston and set in the 1990s New York underworld, with Austin Butler, Zoë Kravitz and Matt Smith among the stars

It follows a New York City bartender and former baseball star (Butler) who finds himself caught in the middle of a motley crew of threatening gangsters after he agrees to look after the cat belonging to his punk-rock neighbour.

The Roses

Release date: Friday 29th August in cinemas

A remake of the 1989 film The War of the Roses – itself based on Warren Adler’s 1981 novel of the same name – this black comedy stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman as a seemingly picture-perfect couple who soon find themselves going through a bitter divorce.

Former Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa is just one big name in a starry supporting cast that also include roles for Andy Samberg, Allison Janney, Sunita Mani, Jamie Demetriou, Zoë Chao and Kate McKinnon.
