Nowadays, there is an app for everything. But which apps should you consider if you are a Montana hunter or fisher? With so many options available, it can be overwhelming to choose.
I generally try to stay free and clear of technology when I go into the field, but these are a few pieces of tech that have helped me enhance my outdoor experience.
If you are in the outdoor space at all, you’ve most likely heard of this app. They offer more than one app to fit your needs, from hunting to overlanding to general recreation.
OnX Hunt is a fantastic tool that gives you multiple map layers to navigate both private and public land boundaries. It also shows wildfires, weather conditions, land ownership details, and much more. One of my favorite features of this app is the ability to download a specific area in detail for offline use without needing cell service.
Have you ever been given bad intel on a fishing spot and realized your informer stuck you in a garhole? Well, Fishbrain gives you the real scoop, and you don’t have to worry if ol’ Jim Bob was playing tricks on you.
Garhole /ɡär-hōl/ noun, verb
In southern terminology, a “gar hole” is a place where hunting or fishing is unsuccessful.
Fishbrain is a phenomenal resource that “will help you find new places to fish with our interactive map and data from over 14 million catches.” You can search a specific area, or you can even narrow it down by species of the fish you want to catch.
For Montana, a particularly helpful resource in the app is a river flow data section. Check up on water temperature, river flow speeds, and water height of the areas you want to target.
Never forget or lose your licenses again by downloading Montana’s official app for hunting and fishing.
“Montana’s MyFWP app provides a simple and easy way to store and display licenses, permits, and digital carcass tags, known as E-Tags, which can be used in the field without cellular service. ” – Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks.
One important tip for using this app is to ensure that you are logged in before entering an area with no cell service. If you are not logged in, you will be unable to access your information.
