Austria to ban phones in schools

Austria is preparing to impose a national ban on smartphones in schools for pupils up to the age of 15 in an effort to turn classrooms back into “places of concentration, achievement and safety”.

The ban, which will take effect from May 1, is also being studied closely in Germany, where the central state of Hesse plans to follow suit at the beginning of the next school year.

At least half a dozen European countries, including Hungary, Latvia and the Netherlands, have announced similar steps over the past 12 months, while France is testing a “digital pause” in 180 middle schools for children aged 11-15.
