At Venice Film Festival, Amal Clooney stuns in a vintage 90s gown

It’s been a summer of truly excellent outfits from Amal Clooney, who has spent the last few weeks in Lake Como, at the home she shares with her husband George. As always, the human rights lawyer has exhibited a mix of classic polish with a fashion edge, opting for beautiful dresses that all have a stylish flourish. From an elegant take on sequins to her own spin on the butter-yellow trend, we have thoroughly enjoyed Amal’s approach to summer style. Now, the Clooneys are in Venice for the annual film festival, where she has already managed to steal the show with her latest red carpet look.

At the premiere for Jay Kelly, the upcoming Noah Baumbach film in which George stars alongside Adam Sandler, Emily Mortimer, Greta Gerwig and Laura Dern, Amal wore a striking fuchsia gown in taffeta. Short at the front but with a billowing skirt that trailed behind her in the wind, the strapless dress had been plucked from the archives; it’s a Jean-Louis Scherrer by Erik Mortensen design from autumn/winter 1995-96.

Amal is a big fan of vintage; just recently, she wore a 1970s fringed gown by Loris Azzaro, while she’s previously chosen several pieces from John Galliano’s era at Dior. Archival looks have become something of a power play in recent years, with Hollywood stylists battling it out to find the rarest and most coveted pieces. If George Clooney’s past assertion is still true that his wife doesn’t work with a stylist, it cements Amal’s fashion nous in collecting these particular pieces.

The Clooneys put on a typically romantic display on the red carpet (George in a classic Giorgio Armani tuxedo), and wouldn’t be deterred by the inclement weather. Amal didn’t look at all concerned when her glorious skirt absorbed a few inches of rain water, which only seemed to add to the theatrical prom queen spirit of it all.
