As overseas travel increases and the number of people raising pets increases, the number of passengers on aircraft with animals has recently increased.

According to Korean Air on the 27th, a total of 57,595 aircraft were boarded with pets last year, up 12.6% from the previous year, including international and domestic flights. Compared to 2020, this is an increase of 109.2%. In order to board the aircraft with your pet, you must apply to the airline to carry it on board or ship it by consignment baggage.

The number of applications showed a trend of increasing every year. There were 27,533 cases in 2020, 27,764 cases in 2021, 39,260 cases in 2022, 51,151 cases in 2023, and 57,595 cases last year.

The number of people boarding international flights with pets is increasing significantly. It is analyzed as a demand for vacationing abroad with the animals they raise. The number of cases has more than tripled from 10,54 in 2020 to 36,263 in 2024. Domestic flights increased only 22.0% from 17,479 to 21,332 during the same period.

As the demand for travel with pets increased, related membership services also appeared. Korean Air is operating “SKYPETS,” a customer preferential program that gives points according to the number of trips with pets and provides free animal transportation services with points earned.

Korean Air allows pets and cages that weigh less than 7kg to carry on board, and if they weigh more than 7kg and less than 45kg, they are loaded into the cargo compartment as consignment baggage. Domestic airlines limit animals that passengers can accompany on airplanes as pets to dogs, cats, and pets.
