Apple Inc. is preparing to launch its latest iPhone SE, expected to hit the market next week, with Alibaba as its AI partner for the rollout of Apple Intelligence in China. Yahoo Finance reports on the company’s impending release as well as mixed market sentiments.
The new iPhone SE will reportedly cost between $400 and $500, featuring a design akin to the iPhone 14. While the introduction of Apple Intelligence—a generative AI platform offering features like advanced Siri capabilities and photo editing tools—could attract users, skepticism remains. Some analysts, such as Jefferies’ Edison Lee, have expressed cautious optimism, questioning the significant impact Apple Intelligence might have on iPhone SE sales in China, given the country’s reliance on third-party local apps.
Market Performance & Economic Context
Analyst Edison Lee cautions against overvaluing Apple’s stock amidst these developments. Despite Apple Intelligence’s rollout, smartphone sales in China are showing signs of decline post-Lunar New Year.
According to IndexBox data, China’s mobile phone export value was USD 132.8 billion in 2024, down from USD 139.5 billion in 2023. Key markets include the United States and Hong Kong SAR, with export values of USD 38.6 billion and USD 31.6 billion respectively in 2023.
Meanwhile, mobile phone import values also saw shifts; in 2023, imports from Vietnam reached USD 967.1 million, followed by Malaysia and Thailand at substantially lower figures.
Challenges Ahead
Apple faces the challenge of integrating Apple Intelligence effectively in China, harnessing Alibaba’s local expertise to overcome data leveraging issues with its apps. Apple’s China sales, however, fell short of expectations, with a 2024 revenue of USD 66.9 billion compared to USD 72.5 billion in 2023.
Despite these hurdles, Deepwater Asset Management’s Gene Munster believes the Alibaba partnership could mitigate some challenges, emphasizing the importance of executing seamless AI integration and adapting pricing strategies to local market conditions.
