Anna Winter (75), the famous editor of Vogue, a fashion magazine famous for being a real model for the global hit “The Devil Wears Prada,” will step down as editor-in-chief after 37 years.
According to foreign media such as the New York Times (NYT) on the 26th (local time), editor-in-chief Winter announced the resignation of the editor-in-chief at a staff meeting the day before, saying, “I wanted to talk to you this morning about an important decision that I have been contemplating for a long time.”
But this does not mean retirement from Vogue. Winter will maintain the role of global editor of Vogue, the newly established position, and as global CCO of Condenast, the publisher of Vogue, and will oversee content from Condenast publications published worldwide. Condenast publishes various pop culture magazines around the world, including GQ and Vanity Fair.
“This is the time when the company is pouring everything (my) into it,” he said. “I will not move not only the office but also a Clarisse Cliff pottery (which I care about).”
“We will focus on global leadership for the next few years and work with outstanding editors around the world to support them in every way possible,” he stressed.
The New York Times said that as the media industry and fashion industry are in turmoil, Winter oversees all of Condé Nast’s publications, including the British, French and Italian versions of Vogue, and remains the most influential figure in Vogue.
Winter, who is from England, joined Condenast in 1983 when he was in his early 30s and led his heyday by serving as Vogue’s editor-in-chief since 1988. Winter also solidified his position as a fashion mogul who dominated the success of designers, celebrities, and brands during this period.
His unique style, which has kept his front seat of a big fashion show with short hair and large sunglasses, left a deep impression on the fashion world as well as the public. It was included in the movie “The Devil Wears Prada” (2006) starring Maryle Streep, a famous Hollywood actor.
Winter, known as an enthusiastic supporter of the Democratic Party of the United States, was also named the winner of the “Presidential Medal of Freedom” in January during the Joe Biden administration. In Britain, his home country, he was also given the title of “Dame,” a knighthood given to women in 2017, and in February this year, he was awarded the “Honorary Companion Medal.”
