The Alabama Senate has passed its version of a bill, SB92, aimed at banning the use of wireless communication devices, including cell phones, in public schools. This legislative move follows the Alabama House of Representatives’ approval of a similar bill.

SB92 prohibits a student from using, operating, or possessing a wireless communications device on public elementary or secondary school grounds during the instructional day subject to certain exceptions and subject to written policies adopted by a local board of education to implement this act.

Governor Kay Ivey expressed her support for the legislation on Facebook, stating, “The Senate unanimously passed the FOCUS Act, which removes the distraction of cell phones during students’ classes. There’s a time and a place for our phones, but while a teacher is teaching is NOT it. Thank you, Sen. Donnie Chesteen. Let’s get this bill to my desk!”

The bills from both the House and Senate must now swap chambers. The first to successfully pass through both will be sent to Governor Ivey for final approval. The passage in both chambers suggests a favorable outcome for the legislation.
