JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) – A lawmaker from Jefferson County is proposing a ban on cell phones in classrooms.
State Rep. Patrick Sellers from Pleasant Grove has pre-filed a bill that would require the Alabama State Department of Education to implement this ban. The Birmingham Federation of Teachers supports this initiative, stating that it is long overdue and will help eliminate distractions that hinder students’ learning.
Rep. Sellers said this bill will reduce disturbances faced by both teachers and students in the classroom.
Below is the pre-filed bill proposed by Rep. Sellers.
Richard Franklin, the President of the Birmingham Federation of Teachers, agrees with the proposal. He notes that cell phones can be distracting and may contribute to issues such as fights and bullying. Additionally, he mentions that having phones in class can lead to unnecessary parental involvement during the school day.
