AHPS launches new app for secure bus schedules

COVINGTON, Va. (WDBJ) – Alleghany Highlands Public Schools is launching a new bus app to improve student safety and allow parents to track their children to and from school.

EZ A2B Parent Portal is an online system that provides parents with bus route alerts for their child’s assigned bus. This includes notifying parents when their child’s bus is delayed, if a child gets off at the wrong stop, and when the bus is approaching its drop-off and pick-up location.

AHPS School Board Chair Jonathan Arritt said the portal will display the most up-to-date information and is essential in increasing student privacy. The app only gives district administrators and verified parents or guardians access to students’ bus information.

“Previous to technology like this, we were forced to publish routes and to make that public. And of course, nothing inherently wrong with that, but we do have some families who worry about the safety and security of doing such a thing. So not just anyone can download the app and know the bus routes of the student. You have to be on file with the system to be able to access any of that route information,” said Arritt.

AHPS is rolling out the app in phases. They are currently in phase 1, which is helping parents get registered and verified.

“Thank you for your patience as we launch this new system. Any glitches will be addressed as quickly as possible,” said Christina Lemaster, AHPS Supervisor of Transportation.

Parents can download the app from both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
