LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – Gov. Jim Pillen testified in support of a bill to ban student cell phone use in schools on Tuesday.
During the hearing, Pillen cited two main reasons for the proposal: first, that cell phones are a major distraction in classrooms, and second, that they negatively impact children’s well-being.
The bill does have some exceptions, like in cases of an emergency or health monitoring.
Pillen emphasized the need for consistency across schools, stating, “Our teachers need to focus on helping students learn, not policing cell phone use. LB140 provides a commonsense approach to ensure all schools are on a level playing field.”
