Bill to ban cell phones in schools pre-filed for legislative session

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – The 2025 Alabama Legislative session is just a few weeks away. One bill that is sparking attention is a ban on cell phones in schools.

Representative Patrick Sellers said he hears concerns from educators about distractions in the classroom, with cell phones being at the top of that list.

“But if our focus is to teach and to train our children, then let’s take out the distractions,” said Rep. Sellers.

The bill would ban the use of cell phones in classrooms kindergarten through 12th grade. There would be a few exceptions such as medical reasons.

Rep. Sellers said the cell phones are not only a distraction, but are causing disciplinary issues as well.

“It is outstanding how many issues actually end up with a cell phone and be texting, bullying, pornography all those sorts of things,” said Rep. Sellers.

If passed, the bill would go into effect for the 2025-2026 school year. The state school board would create the policy and distribute it to schools.
