The Sugar Bowl between Georgia and Notre Dame is now scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 2nd.
MACON, Ga. — Two UGA fans traveled to New Orleans for the big Sugar Bowl game.
They left Macon with excitement and anticipation, but were soon met with tragedy before their trip had even begun, when a man drove his truck into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, killing 15 people and injuring more.
“It was sort of weird because police presence is unreal here,” Sara Roberts said.
“I didn’t feel unsafe – I mean, we had a blast and there were police everywhere,” Kira McCauley said.
The pair traveled 7 hours from Macon to New Orleans to support the Bulldogs, but never expected what happened next. McCauley says she and her husband walked around Bourbon Street until 1 a.m.
“We’re actually staying on Bourbon Street. We walked around, we went out to eat dinner and then finally, we went out last night,” McCauley said.
It wasn’t until later that night when she was evacuated from her hotel when she heard the news.
“It was definitely very eye opening, you know, things can change in a matter of seconds for sure,” McCauley said. “It could have easily been us. We were – we were out there.”
Roberts says it was chaos from when the attack happened to the game being postponed.
“People trying to get an extra room, people – like, you just hear them in there on talking on the phone trying to get their flights changed,” Roberts said.
She says her original plan was to leave Thursday morning, but now she has to rearrange those plans to attend the game.
“We came down with about 5 people, but 2 of us came in one car, but she has to get back by tomorrow. So, I’m going to move. I’m going to go in with the other people and stay in their room,” Roberts said.
McCauley says her and her husband will be staying one extra day to attend Thursday’s postponed game.
“There was a lot of security yesterday,” McCauley said. “I feel like it’s going to be top notch tomorrow. I mean, I am scared a little bit.”
The game between Notre Dame and Georgia is now scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
