ChatGPT for macOS now compatible with Apple Notes and other apps

In a significant update, OpenAI has expanded the capabilities of ChatGPT on macOS, adding support for a variety of popular note-taking and coding applications, including Apple Notes and VSCode. This new functionality allows users to receive real-time assistance directly within their preferred apps, enhancing productivity and streamlining workflows.

Key Highlights:

ChatGPT Integration: Now compatible with approximately 30 macOS apps.

Supported Applications: Apple Notes, BBEdit, VSCode Insiders, Notion, Quip, MatLab, IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, and more.

Availability: Currently available only to paid subscribers of ChatGPT, with plans to roll out to free tier and Windows users next year.

OpenAI introduced this update as part of its 12-day shipping event, where new features and improvements are announced daily. On day 11, the company shared the news via a post on X (formerly Twitter). Kevin Weil, Chief Product Officer at OpenAI, detailed that ChatGPT’s new agentic feature allows it to access on-screen information in supported apps and assist users in real time.

How It Works:

Users can activate the feature by pressing the shortcut Option + Space while using any supported app. This opens a compact ChatGPT window over the app, allowing the AI to view the same information as the user. Users can interact with ChatGPT by typing queries or using the Advanced Voice Mode. For instance, if a user highlights a section of text or code, they can ask ChatGPT for help with natural language commands like “how can I improve this?” or “what does this code do?” The chatbot understands the context and provides relevant responses, making it easier to get real-time feedback or explanations without disrupting the workflow.

This update is currently exclusive to paid subscribers, including those on Plus, Pro, Teams, Enterprise, and Edu plans. OpenAI assures that free tier and Windows users will receive this feature next year, ensuring that the enhanced functionality will soon be available to a broader audience.
