Later this week, the third film in the Sonic movie series hits cinemas, and this latest instalment is set to adapt one of the most beloved stories of fans of the Blue Blur.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 introduces the character Shadow the Hedgehog, voiced by Hollywood legend, Keanu Reeves. Team Sonic will have a challenge on their hands when they face the Ultimate Life Form and another unexpected villain.
The game adaptation is expected to be one of the big cinematic hits over the Christmas period. However, if you’d prefer to catch the flick at home, we have everything you need to know.
When does Sonic the Hedgehog 3 release in cinemas?
The third Sonic film releases in the US on 20 December 2024, and 21 December 2024 in the UK – though some cinemas are showing preview screenings the day before.

When could Sonic the Hedgehog 3 be released on VOD?
Paramount hasn’t confirmed when you’ll be able to rent or buy Sonic 3 on digital. However, we can look at patterns from other films by the studio to predict when it might happen.
The digital release dates of films differ depending on box office performance. Sonic 3 is currently projected to outpace Disney’s Mufasa, according to Deadline, which is a positive sign. The first two films in the series also performed strongly.
Movies that have done well from Paramount such as Smile 2 and A Quiet Place: Day One were released one month after hitting cinemas. Sonic 2 took longer than this at around a month and a half, but generally, we’re seeing films hit VOD more quickly than we used to.
Therefore, we’d expect to see Sonic the Hedgehog 3 drop on VOD from the end of January 2025 at the earliest. However, if it performs very well, Paramount could delay this date even further.
When could Sonic the Hedgehog 3 be released on streaming services?
The first streaming service Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will land on should be Paramount+ – Sky customers in the UK can get a free subscription.
Paramount films typically land quite quickly after they debut on VOD, though the time scale varies. Smile 2 arrived around two weeks after it was released on digital, but A Quiet Place: Day One took 28 days.
If our above prediction about the VOD is correct, we expect Sonic the Hedgehog 3 to arrive on Paramount+ in February/March 2025.
It’s worth saying that Sonic 2 arrived on VOD and Paramount+ simultaneously, so there is a chance that this could happen – we’re just using the most recent patterns to base our estimations.
We could eventually see the film become available on other streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video as we’ve seen with previous Sonic titles, but this won’t be for a while.

When could Sonic the Hedgehog 3 be released on DVD/Blu-ray?
It’s hard to predict when physical copies of Sonic 3 may release, as there’s no real set pattern for Paramount films – the window from VOD to DVD ranges from two weeks to over 40 days.
We’ll add in more information as soon as we have it.
