KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – It’s been over a month since dozens of school threats put several schools across East Tennessee on lockdown, leading to arrests across the region.
As Knox County leaders told parents to have conversations with their kids to prevent further threats, they were also working on a way to continue being proactive.
The Qustodio app launched on Friday for Knox County Schools, which is an app that parents can use to monitor their kids’ online activity outside of school hours.
“Parents are used to having tools for a device that they own, but it’s a little more complicated when it’s a school device managed, for example, by Google,” said KCS’s Chief Technology Officer Freddie Cox.
This app is intended to help parents know how much screen time their child is engaging in on their school-issued tablets, and it also can give families an idea of what they’re being used for after school hours.
Through Qustodio, you can see how many minutes and hours a student is using their tablet for homework and academic websites while keeping an eye on any other non-school-related searches.
“It’s opening that dialogue between the student and the parent. The parent and the school. So that everybody is aware about the things our kids are doing and learning while they’re at home,” said Cox.
The app also gives parents the ability to pause the internet connection on tablets after school hours, which gives families the option of how much screen time a student should have.
