Not correcting uniform is behaviour issue says Cromwell in Chatteris

Earlier this week, 20 Year 11 girls at Cromwell Community College were spoken to about their “unsuitable” trousers.

A large number of parents contacted the Cambs Times, claiming the pupils in question were threatened with seclusion if they didn’t have the correct trousers by the following morning.

However, The Active Learning Trust – which runs the college – denied this.

A spokesperson said yesterday: “Seclusion is only used if our behaviour policy is not met – not for failing to have the correct uniform.”

The Cambs Times has since seen a letter sent to parents from the college’s vice-principal, Matt Stevenson.

In it, he states that “should items not be rectified in a timely manner, the pupil will be placed in seclusion”.

Following this, parents questioned the specificity of the trust’s statement.

The Active Learning Trust has now clarified its position: “If parents cannot bring in a suitable alternative for a student to change into, students are able to borrow alternative uniform items from the school while their new items are on order, meaning that their uniform can be corrected very quickly.

“Seclusion is only used if a student is not adhering to the request to correct their uniform – this then becomes a behaviour issue.”
