Pupils and staff from Mayfield School, Whitehaven, took part in their annual MOVE Day which sees the pupils celebrate their mobility achievements.
The MOVE programme is an activity-based programme to support pupils with physical disabilities. Every child is given the opportunity to gain independent mobility through head control, sitting, standing and walking alongside any other physical skills specific pupils’ needs.
This year’s graduate from the programme was eight-year-old Oliver Donachy. When he first started Mayfield he used a wheelchair at all times and was unable to weight bear. Now he can walk independently.

His mum, Charlotte Swinburne, said: “When Oliver was born we were told he would face many hurdles due to his disabilities. As he grew older, his mobility was very limited so we learned to manage our expectations.
“Then Oliver started Mayfield School and things changed for the better – the MOVE programme has been incredible. He has built up his confidence to stand independently and can now walk short distances unaided.’’
And Charlotte added: “We no longer manage expectations but welcome any task as Oliver is a very determined little boy. He exceeds each goal set for him.
“We cannot thank the MOVE team enough for their dedication and hard work. I don’t think Oliver would be where he is today without the MOVE programme.’’

Ellie Earle, teacher and one of the MOVE co-ordinators, said: “It is a privilege working with our pupils on the MOVE program, it develops skills for life and there is nothing more magical than being a part of those ‘firsts’.
“MOVE is integrated into much of the child’s everyday routine so that skills can become transferrable. Staff at the school work closely with parents and other professionals to ensure a holistic approach to the programme.’’
Mayfield is a Centre of Excellence for the programme.
Sophie McCabe, head of Mayfield, said: “It was a wonderful celebration of our young people’s achievements. It was lovely for them to celebrate together and with parents, carers and family members.
“It is hard to put into words just how fabulous the day was. Staff and our school are fully committed to the MOVE programme as they can see the benefits for our young people. I must say a big thank you to my colleagues for organising this event.”
