23rd April 2025 – (Hong Kong) A Taiwanese tourist recently shared his shopping experience at Hong Kong’s Ladies’ Market on Instagram, where he captured a shocking incident involving a suspected counterfeit Dyson hair dryer. While testing the product at a souvenir stall, the dryer emitted a loud “pop” sound and thick white smoke, startling both the tourist and the stall owner. The entire scene was caught on video and quickly went viral, sparking heated discussions among netizens in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
The tourist explained that curiosity led him to inquire about the performance of the fake Dyson hair dryer, wanting to see if it functioned similarly to the original. However, upon plugging in the device, the stall owner was caught off guard as the dryer began spewing smoke for over ten seconds. The owner, visibly shocked, exclaimed, “How could this happen? I’ve never seen this before!” The tourist and his friend laughed off the situation, joking as they left, “The owner hasn’t even started business today and already lost one.”
The 13-second video of the incident attracted significant attention online, with many viewers questioning the safety and quality of counterfeit products. Some joked that the hair dryer looked more like a “dry ice machine,” while others humorously commented that they could “smell the burning from the video.” Speculation arose that the issue might have been caused by incompatible voltage, with several users noting that such items are often cheaply sourced from platforms like Taobao.
In response to the video, some Hong Kong residents remarked that Ladies’ Market is notorious for selling fake goods, which is why locals rarely shop there. The tourist replied, “I know, but I just found it interesting to check out. I didn’t expect the fake products to be so fragile.”
