Tesla Holds Top Spot in U.S. EV Market Despite Q1 Sales Dip

Tesla remains the dominant electric vehicle brand in the United States, accounting for over 43% of all EVs sold in the first quarter of 2025, even as its overall sales dropped nearly 9% compared to the same period last year.

According to new data from Cox Automotive, Tesla sold 128,100 vehicles in Q1, down from 140,187 in Q1 2024.

The Model Y and Model 3 continued to lead the charge, making up nearly 90% of Tesla’s sales. The Model Y sold 64,051 units, while the Model 3 followed with 52,520 — a sharp 70% increase year-over-year for the Model 3, but a 34% decline for the Model Y.

The Cybertruck saw strong interest with 6,406 units sold, more than doubling from last year. The luxury Model S and Model X, however, saw significant declines, down 70% and 32% respectively, with just 1,280 Model S and 3,843 Model X vehicles sold in the quarter.

Even with the dip, Tesla’s closest competitors remain far behind. Ford placed second with 22,550 EV sales, followed by Chevrolet at 19,186, and BMW with 13,538. Hyundai, Honda, and Volkswagen also reported gains, but none came close to Tesla’s market share.

Overall, U.S. EV sales totaled 296,227 units in Q1 — an 11.4% increase year-over-year — indicating steady growth in the EV market, even as Tesla’s lead slightly narrowed.
