DUBOIS — The DuBois and Lakeview baseball teams played a marathon contest Friday at Showers Field, with the host Beavers pulling out a thrilling 6-5 victory on a walk-off single by Samson Deeb in the bottom of the 13th innings to hand the Sailors their first loss of the season.
Both teams have gotten off to strong starts earlier in the year.
In fact, Lakeview (4-1) hadn’t allowed a run in hits first four games while outscoring its opponents 41-0. DuBois (5-1) changed all that Friday and looked to be in control after taking a 5-1 lead following a four-run bottom of the fifth.
However, Lakeview rallied late, scoring a run in the sixth before pushing three more across in the seventh to tie the game at 5-5 against reliever Alex Sago. The teams then battled for six extra innings, with both side putting up zeros in the first five.
DuBois’ Wes Clyde tossed a hitless 8th, 9th and 10th innings, striking out three and walking a pair. Deeb then took over on the mound and kept the Sailors scoreless in the 11th, 12th and 13th. He allowed one hit whiile striking out three and walking one.
The Beavers then proved to be the team to break through in the bottom of the 13th.
Bostom Graham led off the 13th with a single but was quickly erased at second when Talon Hodge bunted into a fielder’s choice. Hodge made up for the failed sac attempt though, as he quickly stole second. He went to third on a Tyler Chamberlin groundout and scored when Deeb smacked a single to left side of the infield.
Deeb’s walk-off hit also earned himself the victory on the mound. He finished the day 2-for-7 at the plate with a pair of RBIs. Tyler Chamberlin (2-for-6) and Madix Clark (2-for-5) also had multiple hits for the Beavers.
Farrell started on the mound and tossed five strong innings, allowing one run (earned) on two hits while striking out 11 and walking four. He left the game with the Beavers leading 5-1 but wound up with a no-decision when Lakeview rallied late to force extra innings.
DuBois grabbed its first lead with that four-run bottom of the fifth with the game tied 1-1 entering the inning.
Deeb plated the first runin the inning with a single before Trey Wingard tripled home Deeb. A Farrell double then brought in Wingard before Farrell scored himself later in the inning to put DuBois up 5-1 at the time.
