A peaceful seaside stroll turned into an unexpected mystery for visitors at Margate Beach, Kent, when an eerie, skeleton-like figure washed ashore, leaving beachgoers baffled and intrigued.
Among those who made the bizarre discovery was Paula Regan, who was out for a sunny beach walk with her husband, Dave, on Monday, March 10. The couple, hoping to enjoy some fresh air, instead found themselves at the center of a growing crowd of puzzled onlookers, all trying to make sense of the mysterious object partially buried in the sand.
Paula recalls the moment they first spotted the strange shape on the otherwise empty beach. “At first, I thought it was just a bit of driftwood or even a dead seal because of the odd tail fin shape,” she told the South West News Service. But as they got closer, the reality was even stranger.
“For the life of me, I can’t tell you what it was,” she admitted. “The head looked skeletal, but the tail-like section was soft and squidgy—not slimy or decomposed, just… bizarre.”
Before long, other curious beachgoers started to gather. A mix of dog walkers, passers-by, and even a man setting up beach huts stopped to get a closer look. “Nobody could figure it out,” Paula said. “Some thought it was a figurehead from a ship, like one of those carved mermaids, while others thought it might have simply fallen off a boat.”

Paula, who lives in London, knew she had to capture the moment. “I just knew no one would believe us if we didn’t take a picture,” she laughed.
As images of the mysterious ‘creature’ spread online, social media users jumped in with their own theories. Some suggested it could be a forgotten piece of art, flotsam, or even a marketing stunt.
This isn’t the first time a mysterious object from the sea has left the public puzzled. Just last spring, beachgoers were stunned when a massive, bloodsucking sea creature, roughly the size of a child, washed up on a UK shore—drawing comparisons to the giant sandworms from Dune.
