If JD Vance were to compose his own personal “My Favourite Things”, I imagine that taunting Volodymyr Zelensky, axing government departments and tipping illegal immigrants into the Gulf of Mexico (sorry, America) might well feature. Britain, the evidence suggests, would not. According to Vance, it is a place where they muzzle freedom-loving Christians and which “could actually be the first truly Islamist country to have a nuclear weapon”.
Vance’s latest criticism of Britain is at least less bonkers than some of his previous broadsides, but then the venue drew out the nerd in him rather than the tub-thumper. In a speech on Tuesday to a conference of tech bros in Washington DC, he cited Britain as an illustration of the dire economic consequences of immigration.
