Labour Dispute Disrupts Traffic Near Hong Kong International Airport
Hong Kong International Airport experienced traffic disruptions on the morning of March 7 due to a gathering of workers protesting alleged labour disputes. According to reports, the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) was informed at approximately 9:30 AM that a large group of workers had assembled near the Airport South Interchange.
In response to the situation, AAHK promptly deployed personnel to assess the scene and alerted the police. The demonstration caused temporary traffic congestion in the vicinity, prompting AAHK to coordinate with bus operators and implement traffic diversions. Normal traffic flow was gradually restored by 10:15 AM.
AAHK expressed deep concern over the matter and called on Gammon Construction, the main contractor involved, to address the workers’ grievances swiftly and fairly. The authority emphasized the importance of ensuring that all workers receive their rightful wages and pledged to closely oversee Gammon Construction’s response to the dispute.
The incident highlights ongoing challenges within the construction sector regarding wage disputes and labour rights. AAHK has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining fair labour practices and ensuring smooth operations at one of the world’s busiest airports.
