Get up close and personal with one of the greatest portrait painters of all time, John Singer Sargent, in the stunning Cotswold village where he painted some of his finest works – including this portrait of close friend Flora Priestley (pictured).
The village of Broadway became a creative hub in the late Victorian era, playing host to legendary figures including William Morris and Henry James as well as Sargent, making it a must-visit for art and culture aficionados.
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Sargent’s death this year, Broadway Museum & Art Gallery has gathered work and mementos from his time spent living there – including portraits of his sisters not normally on view to the public and personal letters. The result is a truly intimate experience in a historic, honey-coloured stone building in the centre of this picturesque village.
Plus, nearby historic hotel the Lygon Arms – which has played host to royalty as far back as Charles I – is offering a special “Palette & Pillow” package to tie in with the exhibition and help you to retrace John Singer Sargent’s steps. Alongside a luxurious overnight stay and cooked breakfast, it includes a one-hour guided tour of the exhibition so you can immerse yourself in his world.
“John Singer Sargent and his Circle” runs until 19 July
