Summer is almost here, which means now is the time to start prepping for those much-needed getaways for you and your pet! Vacations, staycations, road trips, and out-of-town flights all require adequate planning to make sure your pet is comfortable and safe during the journey.
Here are a few ways to prepare for your upcoming summer travels with your pet.
- Book flights ahead of time: Air travel picks up during the summer months, so it’s important to make sure you and your pet are ticketed and ready for takeoff! Many airlines charge additional fees for pet travel and have a maximum number of pets allowed per flight. Book ahead of time to avoid any delays and last-minute stress.
- Know airline pet restrictions: Small breeds are usually allowed in the cabin when under a specific weight. Larger pets are restricted to cargo, and certain breeds with breathing issues, like French Bulldogs and Pugs, aren’t allowed to fly in cargo due to health risks. Some warmer cities even restrict pets from flying during the summer, so keep that in mind before booking any air travel.
- Get your pet’s vaccines up to date: All pets should be healthy before flying. Make sure your pet has an updated rabies and parvo vaccine, along with any other mandatory vaccines. This helps prevent the spread of diseases and illnesses, which is especially important if your pet is staying at a boarding facility with other animals.
- Stock up on pet medication: If your pet takes medication, ask your vet to prescribe enough to cover the full length of your trip.
- Book accommodation ahead of time: Just like plane tickets, hotels and accommodation (for both humans and pets) fill up fast in the summer. Whether your pet is staying in a boarding facility or you’re looking for a pet-friendly hotel or B&B, book your stay early!
- Explore pet babysitting apps: Just because you’re traveling out of town doesn’t mean you have to leave your pet behind! If your hotel or accommodation doesn’t allow pets, check out trusted pet-sitting apps where local animal lovers offer daily walks, check-ins, and even boarding in their home or yours. These platforms offer personalized care, and your pet can stay in a more comfortable environment rather than a traditional boarding facility.
- Keep microchip info up to date: In unfamiliar places, pets are more likely to run off when anxious. Make sure your pet’s microchip has your current contact info, including your phone number and address, as well as any medical conditions to be aware of.
- Practice carrier transport: Whether you’re flying or driving, your pet may need to be in a carrier. And let’s be honest—most of them would rather not! Get them used to the carrier before your trip by adding favorite treats, familiar toys, and cozy blankets to help them reimagine it as a safe, comfy space.
- Stay hydrated: Your pet needs extra water in the warmer months, especially when spending time outdoors. You can even add hydration tablets to their water bowl on super hot days to provide extra hydration. Be sure to learn the signs of heatstroke, like fatigue, excessive drooling, stumbling, or disorientation, and most importantly—never leave your pet unattended in a hot car.
- Maintain a consistent schedule: Even when out of town, try keeping your pet on their usual schedule. That means regular walk times, bathroom breaks, and the same amount of food (with a few vacation treats, of course). A consistent routine can help ease travel anxiety and make them feel more at home, no matter where you are!
