President Trump is expected to hit Britain with tariffs that will be “effective immediately” as ministers warned businesses to brace for economic “turbulence”.
The White House said that “liberation day” as Trump has called it, would “fix the wrongs of the past” and “restore the golden age of America”.
It said that while many countries, including Britain, had called Trump to negotiate exemptions from the new taxes they were likely to be rebuffed. “There is one country that the president cares most about and it is the US,” a White House spokeswoman said.
Trump is expected to announce tariffs of up to 20 per cent on all imports into the US, hitting Britain’s £60 billion worth of exports.
The EU has said it will put tariffs on imported US products including Harley-Davidson motorcycles
