President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he would impose 100% tariff on all Canadian goods entering the U.S. if Canada finalizes a new trade agreement with China, escalating trade tensions.
In a post on Truth Social, the President wrote:
Canada and China reached a preliminary agreement earlier this month to lower tariffs and expand market access, including reduced Chinese duties on Canadian agricultural exports and lowered Canadian tariffs on a limited number of Chinese-made EVs. Many provisions of the Canada-China agreement are expected to take effect by March, however, the President did not specify if the tariffs would take effect immediately or at that point.
However, analysts warned that imposing a 100% tariff on Canadian imports would likely trigger sharp price increases in the U.S., particularly given Canada’s role as a major supplier of energy, vehicles, and auto parts.
Despite a previously announced 35% tariff last summer, most Canadian goods remain exempt under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which kept the effective tariff rate below 4% as of October.
